Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family cultivated worldwide as an oilseed and ornamental plant. It is characterized by large and very showy inflorescences that grow atop a stem that can reach heights of 1.5-2.5 meters, with few leaves. The petals are typically yellow, although they can also be brown, orange, and other colors. Sunflower seeds or 'pipelines' are considered very healthy as they are rich in Vitamin E, fats, and minerals.
General Cultivation Tips:
Sunflower for Pipelines: Excellent hybrid variety producing large (2-3 cm) 'pipelines' with a white shell and dark stripes. A vigorous, balanced medium-sized plant yielding large heads.
Cultivation: Sow from March to May directly in the definitive field with a spacing of 75 x 15 cm. Once the plants sprout, they can be spaced 30 cm apart. If birds become a problem, covering the 'heads' when the grain is formed is advisable. Harvest occurs in September and October, although it may vary by region and growing cycle.
