The Lincoln pea (Pisum sativum) is an annual plant belonging to the legume family. As a horticultural crop, both the seeds and tender pods are harvested, depending on the variety cultivated. The dwarf pea encompasses low-growing varieties that do not require support. Its height ranges between 25 to 70 cm approximately, featuring white flowers. This plant is easy to cultivate, thriving during mild seasons, and is commonly found in family gardens.

GENERAL CULTIVATION TIPS FOR DWARF PEAS:

  • Best suited to temperate and humid climates, it does not tolerate severe frost (below -6°C). The ideal growth temperature lies between 14-26°C. Excessive heat can be detrimental.
  • Humidity both in soil and air is essential, although they cannot withstand waterlogging, which can lead to root asphyxiation and plant death.
  • Prefers light to medium-textured, well-drained soils. Avoid sowing in clayey or overly wet soils.
  • Not overly demanding on nutrients, yet a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer is beneficial for growth.
  • Sowing is done directly into the cultivation ground.
  • In warm climates, sowing occurs in September, October, and November; in colder regions, from February to May.
  • Seed spacing should be 60-70 cm, and sowing should be done in rows with a usage rate of 20-30 kg per 1000 m² depending on the variety.
  • In larger plots, herbicides are advisable to control weeds.
  • Irrigation through sprinkling is beneficial. Water must not be lacking during flowering.
  • It has minimal pest and disease issues if planted at the appropriate time and in suitable areas. Potential pests include aphids and diseases like anthracnose and powdery mildew, manageable with appropriate products.
  • Once the pods and seeds are formed, harvest carefully for tender and nutritious produce.
